Forty years ago, (WTF??? How did that happen?), I was working in an elementary school wrestling with smart kids who could not follow directions if their life depended on it. The kids wore labels like: ADD, ADHD, LD, ED.

Yes, these were the “Short Bus” kids

It's Me!

It’s Me!

As a “Speech Teacher” with a masters degree in Communication Disorders, I saw a parade of kids with “learning problems.” Whirling dervishes most of them, brilliant sparklers buzzing around classrooms like lightning bugs. Spontaneous and completely unfocused, teaching was like herding cats.” No wonder these kids got lost in the shuffle.

These “Special Ed” kids were placed in smaller classrooms and we mostly 20 something staff members did our best to give them the special education they needed. Yes, these were the “Short Bus” kids.  You might have been one of them.

Fast Forward Forty Years – That makes me howl every time I think of it. Only the Universe would wrap a full circle like this, right?? Here I am developing social language experiments for adult versions of the kids I tried to help all those years ago. Crazy.

I am meeting the strangest and most wonderful human beings on the planet. You may be one of them. I lovingly say it reminds me of the Cantina Scene in Star Wars. Aliens of all shapes and sizes are coming my way, all in human disguises. What makes an ALIEN and ALIEN?

In my world, an Alien is a human who cannot follow directions to save himself.

An Alien is someone who never answers a question directly.

An Alien has NO natural time or money management skills.  (Curious? Take The Money Quiz)

Look what K.T. just wrote to me:

“After reading through & solving some of the problems, I got flustered and went to the end, like ‘WTF? How many of these questions ARE there??’ I was flustered and felt a level 10 anxious. All these years I’ve been thinking there was something wrong ~ like my brain was mis-wired!!! Turns out, it is!!”

And here is what P.B. and K.F. told me:

“I have always felt like an alien. I never felt like I fit in school at all.”

LESSON NUMBER 1: The most important thing today is that you remind yourself, you are not alone.

So are YOU an Alien? Check it out:

A  –  Adult
L  –  Living
I  –  Intently
E –  Evading
N –  Numbers

I hope you feel a big rush of YES!!

As an ALIEN in good standing, you have at least one super power you haven’t even discovered yet! Isn’t that exciting!!!

Stay tuned, I am hot on the trail of this mission and there will be a new experiment coming soon….just for ALIENS!

Can you relate? Leave a comment below and let me know how this hits you!!

The social implications of a learning disability in the money area are profound. Stay tuned.

SIDENOTE:  I wrote to a national website about money and budgeting and asked: “Do you have any materials for Learning Disabled Adults and Money?”

Look at what I got back:

Hi Catherine,

Thank you for your email.

We currently don’t have any resources for learning disabled adults but, we are developing some resources for another organization targeted at learners with cognitive disabilities. These will be made available sometime later this spring.

Sincerely,
B.C.

Where does an adult with non-existent time and money management skills go for help?

If you have trouble following directions and have weak time and money management skills, stay tuned. The Universe is up to something here and I can’t wait to see what comes next! I am glad you are here!
